Guillaume, First of all I would like to say that we in the Anglo-America community at Aix en Provence greatly appreciate your outstanding contributions to the cultural life of this city. It is all the more deplorable that your employees at Le Renoir Theater tarnish your reputation as a patron of the arts by their unprofessional behavior. Last week I stood in line for about half an hour to see an American film and when I got to the ticket counter the lady there told me in a discourteous tone that she only sold tickets for another film and I must go outside and wait (in the rain), until she started selling tickets for my show, an hour later. The next day I found out that she could have directed me to the concession stand where they were supposed to sell tickets for later shows. Instead, she said she was not making the rules at the theater, failing to inform me that in fact there was a rule allowing me to buy a ticket for the later film.

The particular light of Provence guided him on his creative path to the threshold of abstraction. Today, it's in Aix-en-Provence and surrounding area that you can share Cezanne's experience intensely, as you visit the streets, places and landscapes that marked the life, the outlook and the work of the father of modern painting.

On my way out, I made an uncomplimentary remark in English (not in French) about the “rules,” not to her, but to the person I was with. A short young man who helped the lady at the counter overheard me and misinterpreted the remark, claiming it was personal. He started insulting me in French, together with the lady. I didn’t engage them and left. When I returned an hour later to buy a ticket, the same lady refused to sell it to me, pretending, again in an abusive tone, that I had insulted her. I explained to her they misunderstood me, but the young man joined her and barked at me to get out of the theater. A third employee came and insulted me telling me to leave.

I did leave, promising to complain to the management. The next day I went again to Le Renoir with my son to see The Hobbit. While we were standing in a long line, he noticed that the short young man (who would not give his name to me the evening before), had allowed three of his friends to come into the theater, through a different door, without standing in line or buying tickets for the show.

I wonder if you have a policy according to which your employees are allowed to bring in their friends to watch movies for free. If not, so much for the rules they invoked the night before. When I came three days later to complain about their discourteous behavior to the manager of the theater, he took their side. The others joined him, and they told me to get out of the theater.

I did leave, saying I would never come back, to which the manager remarked: “Tant mieux.” I am sure this is not the kind of attitude you wish to encourage among your employees. Besides, your business will suffer if they refuse to sell tickets to clients or let their friends in for free. I hope you will look into this situation and correct it. Cordially, Michael S.
